Omega Speedmaster Professional Ref. 145.022-69 - Pre-owned

$6,495.00

Introduction and Background

  • Year of Release: The 145.022-69 was introduced in 1969 as the second iteration of the 145.022 series, succeeding the initial 145.022-68.

  • Historical Context: This reference coincided with the monumental achievement of the Apollo 11 moon landing in July 1969. While earlier Speedmaster models (105.012 and 145.012) were used during the Apollo 11 mission, the 145.022-69 marked the first time the Speedmaster case back explicitly celebrated this achievement.

Key Features and Evolution

  1. Case Back Engravings:

    • Early 145.022-69 models retained a standard "Speedmaster" case back without moon-specific engravings.

    • Later in 1969, Omega introduced the iconic “First Watch Worn on the Moon” engraving on the case back, cementing its association with NASA’s space program, also known as the “Straight Writing Case Back.”

  2. Bezel:

    • Early versions of the 145.022-69 featured the coveted Dot Over Ninety (DON) tachymeter bezel, a detail beloved by collectors.

    • By the early 1970s, Omega transitioned to the Dot Next to Ninety (DNN) bezel, which became standard.

  3. Dial:

    • The 145.022-69 featured a matte black dial with tritium lume on the hour markers and hands.

    • The painted Omega logo became standard (replacing the applied metal logo found in earlier references like the 145.022-68).

    • Step dial construction, with a subtle "step" around the hour markers, added depth to the design and is highly sought after by vintage enthusiasts.

  4. Movement:

    • Powered by the Caliber 861, introduced in the 145.022 series. The movement offered a more efficient cam-switching mechanism compared to the Caliber 321 while maintaining reliability and precision.

    • Caliber 861's robustness and higher beat rate (21,600 vph) made it suitable for Omega’s growing production needs.

Connection to the Moon Landing

Although the 145.022-69 itself wasn’t used during the Apollo 11 mission, its release coincided with Omega’s celebration of the moon landing. This reference is the first to feature the moon landing inscription on later models’ case backs, making it deeply tied to the “Moonwatch” legacy.
